My name is Cam Cole and I am the head cook for Part Time Party Porkers. I have been competing for 3 years now under the KCBS banner. It has been a real journey for me. I started with doing a single competition my first year and I am hoping to do as many as 8 per year in the near future. Although I have not been called to the stage as of yet I am sure I will the next time. The competitions are a blast. Where else do you get the opportunity to meet some of the nicest and unique people in the country, while enjoying your passion?
I never started out Barbequing for the competition. I inherited a Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker or better known as WSM and never looked back. From my first total destruction of ribs to delivering some of the best BBQ to friends and family it has been a wonderful venture. It is so cool to cook the same thing, but yet have it come out different each time. Experimenting with different rubs, sauces, and woods is most of the fun, and adding competition into the mix makes it even more fun. With competition you never know how your BBQ will turn out. So much has to be taken into consideration. If you ever do get into BBQ competitions, like myself, you will find it very habit forming.
I am always asked “Where did you place in the competition?” My answer to date has always been the same. “It doesn’t matter where you finish, as long as your friends and family love your BBQ you will always finish first.” Kind of tells you where I have been finishing. I can’t wait to say something like “1st in Ribs, 3rd in Chicken, 6th in Pork, 7th in brisket, or even better Grand Champion.” I know that day will come, but for now I have to settle for my family and friends enjoying my BBQ.
Although I am not one of the greats, yet, I have helped a lot of family and friends with getting started in Barbequing. From helping them with pick out smokers and grills to providing them recipes or even giving them a jar of my BBQ sauce, I hope in some small way I am increasing the passion for Barbequing. So whether you BBQ for fun or competition, I hope you find as much pleasure in it as I do.
